2009-2010 SEASON. Both the varsity and junior high girls recently concluded their summer practices. Currently, there are about 35 participants in the girls basketball program here at CA (13 high school and 22 junior high). Turnout for the practices was usually very good considering all the things that go on during the summer. Tuesdays and Thursdays were spent in the gym with Tuesdays dedicated to fundemental work. Thursdays were used for scrimmages. Wednesdays and Fridays were spent in the weight room in the new field house. This is the first time that the female athletes here at CA had a time set aside and a program dedicated to females only. This time in the weight room was for all female athletes, not just basketball players. The players and the coaches would like to thank Coach Mike Burkett for his hard work in developing and leading the girls weight program. Hopefully, the girls developed an understanding of the importance of a weight program in both development as an athlete and in injury-prevention and in the need for consistent participation in the program. Both players and the coaches should see the improvements in their abilities in the coming years. Thanks again to Coach Burkett!!!!!!!!!
In addition to practices here at the school, several girls attended basketball camp at Leake Academy. In June, the following junior high girls were at camp: Caroline Terry, Hart Pepper, Samantha Johnson, Elizabeth Nations, Holly Hicks, Olivia Shelton, and Analise Bryant. In July, the following high school girls attended the camp: Katie Pepper, Grace Graves, Rachel Weeks, Elizabeth James, and Anna Walker. Hopefully, more girls will be able to attend camp during the summer in the coming years.
As most know, we are in a new district this year with Leake Academy, Simpson Academy, Hillcrest Christian, and Lamar School. We only have 2 returning starters (all-conference players Corey Yeates and Katie Pepper) so there will be several girls that will play a much greater role than last year. This will be our toughest schedule in the past few years and will call for every girl to be at her best at every practice and in every game.
The first day of practice is tentatively set for Monday, October 5th.
